Consultation & Reflective Practice

Thinking Together About Complexity

Consultation

Consultation provides opportunities for professionals, teams and organisations to step back from the immediate demands of practice and reflect on the situations, relationships and challenges they are facing.

People often seek consultation when a situation feels complex, uncertain or stuck. Consultation creates space for collective thinking, helping individuals and groups explore different perspectives, identify possibilities and develop a richer understanding of the issues they are working with.

Whilst consultation may support decision-making, its primary purpose is to facilitate thoughtful reflection and shared understanding.

Who Consultation Is For

Consultation may be helpful for:

• Schools and educational settings
• Health and mental health services
• Social care teams
• Safeguarding professionals
• Community and voluntary organisations
• Leadership teams and managers
• Multi-agency partnerships
• Independent practitioners

Areas of Consultation

Consultation can support reflection on:

• Complex cases and situations
• Safeguarding and risk
• Family and relationship dynamics
• Team functioning and communication
• Professional dilemmas
• Organisational challenges
• Service development
• Working across difference and diversity
• Engagement with marginalised communities

My Approach

My approach to consultation is informed by systemic, relational and collaborative principles.

I am interested in how people make sense of complexity and how wider contexts shape both problems and possibilities. Consultation creates opportunities to explore situations from multiple perspectives, recognising that understanding is often enriched when different experiences, voices and forms of expertise are brought into conversation with one another.

Consultation is not intended to provide ready-made answers or expert solutions. Instead, it offers a structured space for reflection, enquiry and dialogue that can support organisations and professionals in developing a deeper understanding of the issues they face.

Consultation and Professional Decision-Making

Consultation does not replace professional judgement, organisational processes or statutory responsibilities.

Rather, it seeks to strengthen decision-making by creating opportunities for reflection before action. Through thoughtful exploration of different perspectives and influences, individuals and teams may become better placed to make informed, proportionate and ethically grounded decisions.

Ways of Working

Consultation can be provided through:

• Individual consultation
• Team consultation
• Multi-agency consultation
